Watch: Scraps – Projections

Scraps is the long-time solo moniker for Brisbane’s Laura Hill. Recently returned from a tour of Europe, Scraps has released a clip for ‘Projections,’ one of the more playful cuts from her recent LP Electric Ocean which spends as much time in melancholic contemplation as it does forging this kind of electro anti-hit.

Electric Ocean was released to little local attention on UK label Fire Records in March, but that’s not for want of quality. The clip for ‘Projections’ features clipping analog shots of cemetaries, live crowds and constantly changing channels of a a CRT television. It’s appropriate visual company for Hill’s brand of colourful electro-pop, one that smears its slickness with a grounded modesty sourced from Scraps’ beginnings as a bedroom project.

Electric Ocean is out now on Fire Records, but copies seem to be strangely hard to come by.

Watch: Scraps – Mushroom Gods

Not sure how old or new this Scraps song actually is, because the Brisbane songwriter’s Bandcamp page claims it was released in January 2033. And that’s impossible! All I know is that it’s not on any of her physical releases, and this filmclip is brand spanking new: I was actually the very first person to watch it on YouTube.

Scraps is probably still mostly unknown outside of Brisbane, which is a real shame, because her Disembraining Machine 7 inch from last year is well worth a listen, as is the compilation Classic Shits. She featured in the Brisbane 2012 documentary, if you want to know a bit more about her. Crawlspace will solicit an interview eventually, but in the meantime, listen to ‘Mushroom Gods’ and bawl your eyes out. And then buy the track for a buck.

Watch: Brisbane 2012 Documentary

Remember that documentary we mentioned a couple of weeks back about Brisbane’s weird music scene? Well now you can watch it in its entirety. Unlike the cut that was screened at Sound Summit, this version includes an interview with Per Purpose guy Glen Shenau. It’s essential viewing if you’ve got even the vaguest interest in Australian music.

Also featured in the documentary are interviews with Joel Stern (Disembraining Machine, Sky Needle), Scraps, Kitchen’s Floor, Matt Earle (Breakdance the Dawn, xNOBBQx) and Blank Realm. It is directed by Josh Watson.
