Listen: Love Chants – Skirts of Rain

lovechants

Love Chants’ hysterically anticipated (by me) debut 12 inch EP is coming out any day now, and Quemada Records has released a taster in the form of ‘Skirts of Rain’. Love Chants is likely to come as a bit of a surprise to folk interested in some of the music made by the trio’s members: featuring Michael Zulicki from Mad Nanna, Anthony Guerra and Matt Earle of Breakdance the Dawn fame, the most convenient and apt description for this track would be a very simple, unqualified “beautiful”. Tired, autumnal guitar chords play out amidst a calm flurry of percussion and bereft vocals. This is one for fans of Garbage and the Flowers, Hush Arbors, Loren Connors and probably even Slayer.

The EP is due in Australia late March through Quemada. Good local outlets including Black Petal, Albert’s Basement, Wormword Grasshopper, Eternal Soundcheck and Repressed Records will stock it. Each cover is handpainted by Guerra and will cost a week’s worth of beer rations in the near apocalyptic future. International consumers can purchase here.

Listen: Love Chants – I Won’t Run

As someone who hasn’t seen Love Chants at a show yet, I’m very surprised by what I’m hearing here. Love Chants is Anthony Guerra (Black Petal), Matt Earle (Breakdance the Dawn) and Michael Zulicki (Mad Nanna). The group is split between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, so live performances are something of a rarity. Never mind though(!), because a trickle of releases have begun to emerge: Breakdance the Dawn just released a First Session CD-R, and the two tracks below come from a forthcoming EP on Quemada, which is due in early 2013. These songs are reminiscent of Loren Connor’s quieter “airs” at times (he calls ’em that), which isn’t something I expected from a group with ties to X-Wave. Surprises are the best thing.
