Listen: Horse Macgyver + Jack Mannix – On Heat

onheat

Having finally read Jack Mannix’s Cocksucker Bruise ‘zine this week (themes from which he discusses in this great interview), the promise of a collaboration with Horse Macgyver suddenly makes a lot of sense, to the extent that I wonder “why not earlier?” The sounds here are a lot more bracing than the Circle Pit member’s other currently-gigging group Drown Under, but that impression probably derives from this sounding different to anything else happening at the moment.

The collaboration makes sense because there’s a hidden sordid quality in Macgyver’s material, a quality that tears a small hole into an underbelly you’d otherwise dare not peak into. Mannix’s approach in Cocksucker Bruise offers a similar vantage point, but you’re basically getting more (a lot more) of it, and with no sleight-of-hand writerly artifice. Mannix writes the way he sings: unfussy and wretchedly deadpan.

It may be that I’m still recovering from reading the ‘zine, but this collision of Macgyver’s barely cogent menace with Mannix’s ruthless grit makes a helluva lot of sense. It’s enriching. It’s like a semblance colliding with a lived reality. I hope this collaboration continues.

Watch: new Horse MacGyver

Here’s a new track from self-described “loser concrete” vendor Horse MacGyver. It’s called ‘#WHY ARE THEY being PUNISHERS?’ and it appears on a new, official Horse MacGyver website, the existence of which hopefully marks an upswing in activity from the Canberra / Melbourne / Internet artist. I’ve contacted him for an interview, so hopefully we’ll have a bunch of facts soon.

Horse MacGyver also released ‘Chalk Back Drive’ a little while ago, so if you haven’t heard it yet you should.

Listen: Horse MacGyver – Chalk Back Drive

hm

Here’s a new track from Horse MacGyver. Notice how clean it sounds compared to those old cassette and CD-R releases for Disaro and Dream Damage – it almost sounds like Love’s Secret Domain! It’s not though, and Tim Dwyer’s music still sounds like some alternate-universe Saturday morning cartoon, all technicolour ritual murder and subliminal calls to violence.

Tying neatly with Horse MacGyver’s output is another project of Dwyer’s called Zonk Vision, a collective that produces “inclusive psychedelic low art”. Watch for future exhibitions here.

Listen: Horse MacGyver – Junkyard

horsemacgyverIt was only last week we were wondering what ever became of Horse MacGyver, aka Void, aka the artist formerly known as ///△△△\\\. The good news is he definitely still exists, and this new track can attest to that. Not sure exactly how new it is to be honest, but it’s not on his Bad Sound cassette, which still stands as one of the few releases he’s ever officially vendored, and on the Soundcloud page it’s accompanied by the cryptic phrase “new/old werk/wreck”. Anyway, the Melbourne-via-Canberra artist also has a new Facebook page, so hopefully we’ll hear even more stuff shortly.
