For some reason I’ve been reluctant to listen to this new The Friendsters EP. I think they released a track earlier this year or maybe last year that didn’t sit right, or didn’t sink in. Whatever the case, at the recommendation of a friend who claims they invariably divide crowds (some love ’em, some are offended by them) it was important that I reassess, and the song embedded below – ‘Shark Bait’ – is actually really great. The vocals sound gloriously put out, like someone has coaxed the reluctant singer into action. It’s a pretty hopeless song – broken ships, choppy waters, neck deep in the deluge – with a loose metaphor that crashes against very blatant references to depression and anxiety. It can be felt. I am converted.
The tape is available now through Heavy Lows. We’ve got an interview coming eventually.
