Foots is the work of Melbourne resident Patrick McMahon, and in his own words the project “co-opts the rhythms of grime and footwork with the instrumentation and negative space of minimalist rock.” It’s an interesting combination, and in practice it’s a lot more minimal than you might immediately expect. ‘Summon Sine’ sounds a bit drab and lifeless on first listen, but let it run on repeat a couple of times and the idea starts to sink in. While the more electronic influences are readily apparent, the way they’re executed with live rock instruments is pretty clever.
The EP is available to download on the Foots website. Some tracks feature the vocals of Ben Snaath of Orlando Furious. If you’re keen to sample more before making that huge download investment, the full EP is streaming here.
